UD Opera Theatre students join Newark Symphony for performance
9:49 a.m., March 12, 2014--Students from the University of Delaware Opera Theatre will join the Newark Symphony Orchestra (NSO) to present scenes from classic operatic masterpieces in a concert to be held at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 5, at the Newark United Methodist Church, 69 E. Main St.
Conductor for the performance is Ian Christopher Passmore, assistant music director, UD Opera Theatre, and a graduate student pursuing a master of music degree in orchestral conducting, with accompaniment by TongTong Shan, UD Opera Theatre workshop pianist and a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The performance will include Libiamo, from Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata, the Watch Duet from Die Fledermaus, by Johan Strauss II, “O soave fanciulla,” from La bohème, by Giacomo Puccini, and “Alla bella Despinetta,” from Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte.
The concert, featuring students from the UD Opera Theatre Workshop, also includes scenes from operas by Mozart and Puccini.
The orchestra will present a performance of small ensembles as part of its chamber series. Selections include Beethoven’s Trio for two oboes and English horn, Op. 87, Holst’s Woodwind Quintet, Op. 14, Ewald’s Symphony for Brass, Op. 5, arranged by Roman Pawlowski, NSO master emeritus.
The concert shines the spotlight on small ensembles featuring woodwinds, brass, and vocalists. The instrumentalists are musicians from the Newark Symphony Orchestra.
The NSO, conducted by Simeone Tartaglione, music director, has performed as a community orchestra since its founding in 1966, and currently includes about 80 performing musicians of all backgrounds, who share a love of classical music.
Tickets, available at the door, are $15 for adults, $10 for senior adults and $8 for students, and free for those under 12 years of age. Tickets also can be purchased online.
