UD students win awards at national athletic training meeting

4 p.m., July 18, 2013--The University of Delaware’s athletic training education program was well represented at the National Athletic Training Association’s 64th Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposia, held in Las Vegas, Nev., from June 24-27.

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.
  • Leeah Fayson (May 2013 graduate) received a NATA Research and Education Undergraduate Poster Award for her project, “The Effects of Ankle Kinesio Taping on Muscle Activity During a Drop Landing Maneuver.”
  • Andrea Di Trani (first-year doctoral student in the Biomechanics and Movement Science Program) was awarded a $2,500 NATA Foundation Scholarship sponsored by F.A. Davis Company Publishers.
  • Peter Braun was a master’s student oral award finalist for his presentation, “Oculomotor Function in Collegiate Student-Athletes with a Previous History of Sports Related Concussion.”
  • The UD team was the NATA National Quiz Bowl second runner-up.

In addition, 16 UD students and faculty gave presentations or presented posters, and 17 undergraduates attended the event, supported in part by the Student Athletic Trainers’ Club (SATC).

“This was the highest number of undergrads we sent to the national meeting,” said Tom Kaminski, professor and director of the athletic training education program.  “We were also really pleased to have more than 175 alums turn out for our UD ATEP Alumni Party on Tuesday, June 25.”
