Reid to speak on 'Latin America Today' at next Global Agenda

10:48 a.m., April 28, 2014--Michael Reid, writer of the Bello column on Latin America for The Economist and writer-at-large for the region, will be the featured speaker for the final event of the spring University of Delaware Global Agenda series at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 30, in Mitchell Hall.   

Reid specializes in Latin America, international affairs, development, politics and public policy and will speak on the topic “Latin America Today.”

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

The theme of this year’s Global Agenda series, which is directed and moderated by Julio Carrión, director of the Center for Global and Area Studies and professor of political science and international relations, is “Global Demands, Regional Responses.”

The series is free and open to the public.

Now based in Lima, Peru, Reid first joined The Economist in 1990 as Mexico and Central America correspondent and in 1994 began to cover consumer industries. In 1996 he moved to São Paulo to be the bureau chief and in 1999 returned to London as Americas editor, a post he held until December 2013.

Publications by Reid include Forgotten Continent: The Battle for Latin America's Soul (2007) and Brazil: The Troubled Rise of a Global Power (April 2014).

Reid has been interviewed frequently for television, radio and print outlets in Britain, the United States and Latin America, including CNN, BBC World TV, NPR, Globo (Brazil) and El País (Spain).
