UD faculty to screen short films at Fringe Wilmington Festival

6:12 p.m., Sept. 26, 2012--An event that began as a backyard film screening has grown into the Urban Garden Cinema (UGC), which will hold its inaugural event at 7 p.m.,  Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Fringe Wilmington Festival. 

Featuring a diverse group of short films made in Delaware, many by UD students and alumni, the UGC aims to “nurture emerging talents who work with moving images in all its formats.”

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

The festival is part of a larger research project by art professors Colette Gaiter and Amy Hicks, who are studying the practical uses of media for economic development. 

“In an age of on-demand downloads, YouTube uploads, and Vimeo social clubs, UGC attempts to re-energize a vacant space by bringing community together to sit on the grass in concert with the businesses and general public that live and work nearby,” says Hicks. “At the same time our first annual screening celebrates Delaware by showcasing what independent moving image-makers are doing in our state.”

The weekend festival is a result of strong collaboration among the two professors, the Department of Art, the Center for the Study of Diversity, Downtown Visions in Wilmington, the Office of Cultural Affairs, Theatre N and numerous Wilmington businesses and residents.
