Sept. 17: Bridge assessment

Popovics to discuss nondestructive techniques for concrete bridge evaluation

TEXT SIZE

7:50 a.m., Sept. 5, 2012--John Popovics, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Illinois, will deliver an invited lecture titled “Nondestructive Evaluation Using Air-Coupled Impact-Echo Scanning for Bridge Decks,” on Monday, Sept. 17, from noon-1:30 p.m., in 341 Du Pont Hall on the University of Delaware campus in Newark.

The presentation will introduce attendees to impact-echo (IE) and air-coupled sensing, as well as hardware and data management. Popovic will compare nondestructive evaluation (NDE) data obtained from an actual bridge deck to ground-truth conditions, demonstrating successful test results that validate his approach.

Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Hosted by UD’s Delaware Center for Transportation, the seminar is part of the Inspection, Monitoring and Maintenance of Civil Infrastructure (IMMCI) Research Group seminar series within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

It is also part of a “State of Good Repair” traveling lecture series organized by members of the U.S. Department of Transportation Tier I UTC consortium led by Rutgers’ Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation.

Widely published, Popovics’ primary research focus includes non-destructive evaluation, imaging and sensing, applying mechanical and magnetic field phenomena to assess the condition of infrastructure materials and structures. He also studies degradation processes, particularly corrosion.

Popovic is a 1999 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award recipient and a 2012 American Society of Nondestructive Testing Fellowship award winner. He has received several teaching and advising awards from the University of Illinois.
