With the presidential election less than a month away, Common Cause notes that Americans are being bombarded with a dizzying array of negative ads, many financed by anonymous donors. In the rush of their own everyday lives, few have the time or resources to separate fact from fiction.
According to the organization, a vibrant media could help, refusing to air false ads, reporting on their sponsorship and demanding more transparency. But a series of court rulings, an anything-goes regulatory environment, and financial constraints on newspapers and broadcasters have created a media environment that is not up to the task of informing the electorate.
Copps has immersed himself in these challenges through 10 years as a member of the Federal Communications Commission and emerged as one of the nation’s most prominent advocates of media reform.
Copps’ lecture is a part of Common Cause’s new Media and Democracy Initiative. Through this initiative, Common Cause hopes to mobilize citizens to stimulate the development of a more pluralistic and informative media environment.
