Northeastern's dean of engineering to deliver Vinson Lecture

2:34 p.m., Oct. 23, 2012--Nadine Aubry, dean of the College of Engineering at Northeastern University, will deliver the J.R. Vinson Lecture at the University of Delaware on Oct. 30.

The lecture will be held from 11 a.m.-noon in the Center for Composite Materials, Room 106.

Aubry will report on her research team’s progress on fundamental aspects of fluid flow problems targeting microfluidic and self-assembly applications. Specifically, she will address solving fluid flow problems by focusing on efficient fluid mixing and particle manipulation in small fluidic devices.

Much of Aubry’s work involves employing experimental, theoretical and numerical tools to analyze and investigate fluid flow problems using a combination of fluid mechanics and electric field phenomena. She will discuss the dynamics of neutral particles in both bulk liquids and at fluid-liquid interfaces, emphasizing fluid mixing in channels of simple geometry.

Aubry is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Prior to joining Northwestern, she served as the Raymond J. Lane Distinguished University Professor and chair of mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. 

About the J.R. Vinson Lecture

Sponsored by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the J.R. Vinson Lecture honors Jack R. Vinson, H. Fletcher Brown Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Delaware.

Vinson, who joined the UD faculty in 1964 and taught one of the first composites courses in the nation in 1969, was the founding director of the University's Center for Composite Materials in 1974. He served as chairman of UD’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from 1965-79. He is a founding member of the American Society of Composites and a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

For four decades, Vinson has distinguished himself as a dedicated teacher, a prominent researcher in structural mechanics and composite materials, an author or co-author of seven popular textbooks, a highly active contributor to several professional societies and an inspiring mentor to graduate and undergraduate students.
