UD wins two AFP Brandywine Chapter Excellence in Communication Awards
9:15 a.m., Nov. 15, 2012--The University of Delaware was recognized for its philanthropic communication efforts over the past year with two Excellence in Communication Awards from the Brandywine Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) at the chapter’s annual Philanthropy Day Celebration held at the Deerfield Golf Club in Newark, Nov. 15.
UD's Office of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR), working with design firm Kelsh/ Wilson Inc., won in the Newsletter or Magazine Category for the publication Inside Delaware and, working with UD’s Office of Communications and Marketing, won in the Digital Category for the 2012 Alumni Weekend website.

“The University of Delaware nominated two strong entries in the newsletter and digital categories that had strong designs, were well written and easy to read and navigate,” said Debbie Heaton, chair of the Communications Awards Committee and AFP Brandywine Chapter board member.
AFP is an association of professionals throughout the world that advances philanthropy by enabling people and organizations to practice ethical and effective fundraising. The AFP Brandywine Chapter Excellence in Communication Awards recognize and honor non-profit organizations in the Brandywine Valley whose communication and fundraising materials demonstrate excellence, quality, creativity and effectiveness. Non-profits from Delaware, southeastern Pennsylvania, eastern Maryland and southwestern New Jersey participate in the competition.
“To have our efforts recognized by a group like the AFP is a testament to the talented staff we have in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations who work in close partnership with staff in the Office of Communications and Marketing. Their hard work, creativity and dedication is incredibly important to the University and deserves recognition,” said Monica Taylor, Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations.
AFP Brandywine entrusted a judging panel of representatives from organizations including the Delaware Art Museum, Bank of America and StrongPoint Marketing to judge more than 50 nominees on the concept, graphic design, production quality, and overall appeal and how well the submitted material met the desired objectives.
Other awardees were the Milton and Hattie Kutz Home, Inc., the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, the Delaware Art Museum, the Delaware Community Foundation, Children and Families First, and the Nemours Fund for Children's Health.
The awards ceremony was held on Nov. 15 to coincide with National Philanthropy Day. The purpose of this day “is to recognize the great contributions of philanthropy -- and those people active in the philanthropic community -- to the enrichment of our world,” according to AFP.
“We don't often take much time to stop and smell the roses as we are all so focused on raising money and support for our organizations,” said Heaton. “So it is nice for us to take the time, once a year to recognize some great work that is taking place right here in the Brandywine Valley.”
