Phi Beta Kappa inducts newest members

1:35 p.m., May 7, 2013--Fifty-nine University of Delaware undergraduates were inducted into the Alpha of Delaware chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at a ceremony May 4 on the campus.

Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for arts and science disciplines, was founded in 1776. The Alpha of Delaware chapter was founded at the University of Delaware in 1956. The names of the inductees are listed in the program available online

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

Each year the chapter recognizes student award winners.

The deArmond Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship was awarded to Ian Lawrence, a European history and foreign languages and literatures (Ancient Greek and Roman Studies) double major with minors in philosophy and medieval studies and an Honors Program student. This scholarship supports graduate study in history or literature at an institution outside the state of Delaware. Next fall Lawrence will attend graduate school at the University of Chicago, where he will study Near Eastern and classical languages.

The winner of the Herbert Ellis Newman Award was Nora Crawford, a political science and economics double major and an Honors Program student. This award recognizes the third-year undergraduate at the University of Delaware who shows the most outstanding scholarly potential in a Phi Beta Kappa curriculum.

The winner of the Clift and deArmond Award was Hannah Anderson, a biological sciences major and an Honors Program student. This award recognizes the second-year undergraduate at the University of Delaware who shows the most outstanding scholarly potential in a Phi Beta Kappa curriculum.
