Graduate Women in Engineering program sponsors career panel

8:54 a.m., March 6, 2013--The University of Delaware’s Women in Engineering (WIE) program invites interested graduate students to attend its upcoming career panel at 3 p.m., Friday, March 8. 

The event, to be held in 114 Spencer Laboratory, is free and open to the public.

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Geared mainly toward graduate students pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, the workshop will allow students to meet representatives of different work places — in industry and academia — to learn about different work cultures. 

Participants will gain insight into different interview processes, finding the right institutional fit, how to negotiate salary, benefits and other compensation, and the work/family/life policies of different organizations. 

“Our goal is to equip graduate students with information about jobs, work culture and climate in several technical fields,” explains Heather Doty, assistant professor of engineering and a WIE adviser.

Faculty and alumni panelists possess expertise in chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, electrical and computer engineering and mechanical engineering. They include:

• Yamaira Gonzalez, process engineer, DuPont;
• Taesha Mapp-Rivera, strategy and planning manager, DuPont;
• Joshua Hertz, UD assistant professor of mechanical engineering 
• Souad Koliai, UD visiting scholar in electrical and computer engineering;
• Mary Cate Opila, consultant; and
• Qian Xie, principal scientist system design, Broadcom.

The program is sponsored by the Women in Engineering graduate student steering committee and the dean of engineering.
