UD programs rated in U.S. News best graduate schools guide

10:45 a.m., March 13, 2013--The 2014 edition of U.S. News and World Report’s Best Graduate Schools, released March 12, ranks several schools and programs at the University of Delaware in the upper echelon among academic institutions. 

The rankings are published online and will be printed in a guidebook available in April.

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

UD graduate schools and programs newly rated include the following:

• School of Education, ranked at 37;
• College of Engineering, ranked at 55; and
• Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, ranked under the category of top part-time programs, at 69.

The U.S. News website also includes rankings of UD graduate schools and programs from previous years: biological sciences, 130; chemistry, 60; computer and information sciences, 72; criminology, 16; English, 63; geological sciences, 69; history, 64; mathematics, 76; nursing, 127; physical therapy, 2; physics and astronomy, 77; psychology, 67/doctoral program in psychology, 47; public policy administration, 37; and sociology, 64.  

“The University of Delaware offers master’s and doctoral programs of excellence to a growing community of more than 3,600 graduate students,” said James Richards, vice provost for graduate and professional education. “We are delighted that U.S. News has most recently recognized the high quality of our programs in education, engineering, and business and economics.”

Each year, U.S. News ranks graduate programs in business, education, engineering, law and medicine based on expert opinions about program excellence, as well as statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students. 

U.S. News also periodically ranks programs in science, social sciences and humanities, health and other areas based solely on the ratings of academic experts.

Data for the 2014 report were compiled from surveys of more than 13,000 academics and professionals at more than 1,250 programs during fall 2012 and early 2013.
