Rita Dove, Pulitzer Prize winner and former U.S. poet laureate, to speak

11:53 a.m., March 12, 2013--Rita Dove, a Pulitzer Prize winner and former U.S. poet laureate, will visit the University of Delaware campus on April 18-19.

Dove, Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia, is one of the foremost poets of our time, honored and celebrated in the United States and around the world.

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

She was U.S. poet laureate from 1993-95 under President Bill Clinton, and President Barack Obama bestowed upon her the 2011 National Medal of Arts, making her the only poet receiving both the National Medal of Arts and the National Humanities Medal, which she received from Clinton in 1996. 

Dove will present a lecture based on her recent work Sonata Mulattica (2009) on Thursday, April 18, at 5 p.m., in Multipurpose Rooms A and B of the Trabant University Center. A reception in Multipurpose Room C will follow the lecture. 

On Friday, April 19, she will present a reading at 2 p.m. in the Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts, followed by book signing and a reception in the lobby.

All events are free and open to the public.

Dove’s visit is part of the Transnational Encounters Visiting Writers Series sponsored by a cornerstone grant from the College of Arts and Sciences’ Interdisciplinary Humanities Research Center.

The events are organized and hosted by the Department of Women and Gender Studies, Department of English and Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Additional sponsorship is provided by and the Center for Black Culture, Honors Program and Department of Black American Studies.
