March 19: Maren Hassinger to speak

Multimedia artist to speak in Distinguished Artist Lecture Series

8:28 a.m., March 4, 2013--Multimedia artist Maren Hassinger will be the second artist-in-residence featured in the University of Delaware’s Distinguished Artist Lecture Series, which brings eminent artists to campus to initiate new work, advance current projects, and share existing work through performances, exhibits, lectures and student mentorship.

Hassinger will be on campus from March 18-20 and will deliver a guest lectur at the art department’s monthly colloquium on Tuesday, March 19, at 5 p.m. in 130 Smith Hall. She will also do a project with students in Foundations Research Studio classes.

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Hassinger creates sculpture, installation, performance and video art. Her work represents a desire for discovery, which is seen not only in her careful experimentation with artistic materials but also in her invocation of the natural in most of her work.

She has mounted many solo exhibitions and participated in more than 120 group shows. Her work is included in more than 34 catalogs and in the public collections of AT&T and Pittsburgh Airport. She is an Anonymous Was A Woman and International Association of Art Critics awards recipient, and has performed at the Museum of Modern Art, been reviewed in Art in America, The New York Times, and ARTnews, and has received grants from the Gottlieb Foundation, Joan Mitchell Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Hassinger is director of the Rinehart School of Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art. 

The Distinguished Artist Lecture Series is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Paul R. Jones Initiative, the President's Diversity Initiative, University Museums and the Department of Art.
