Department announces Women's History Month film series


1:12 p.m., Jan. 23, 2013--The University of Delaware Department of Women and Gender Studies will host the Women’s History through Film series Tuesdays, from Feb. 19 through March 19.

The series, titled “Women’s History, Women’s Lives,” features five films. Films will be shown at 7 p.m. in 006 Kirkbride Hall and each film will be followed by a featured speaker, who will lead a discussion with the audience.

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

The films are as follows:

  • The Loving Story, on Feb. 19, with featured speaker Arica Coleman, assistant professor of Black American Studies at UD; 
  • Anna May Wong: In Her Own Words, on Feb. 26, with featured speaker Peter Feng, associate professor of English at UD; 
  • The Invisible War, on March 5, with featured speaker Jessica Hinves, U.S. Air Force, retired, and Protect Our Defenders advocate; 
  • Top Secret Rosies: The Female Computers of World War II, on March 12, with featured speaker LeAnn Erickson, filmmaker and associate professor of film and video production at Temple University; and 
  • Salaam Dunk, on March 19, with featured speaker Fariba Amini, an Iranian-American freelance writer and journalist.

“Women’s History, Women’s Lives” is free and open to the public. It is also the course WOMS 291, which students may take for credit. 

This year’s series is sponsored by the departments of Anthropology, English, History, Math, Sociology and Women and Gender Studies, as well as the Faculty Senate Committee on Cultural Activities and Public Events (CAPE), the Office of Equity and Inclusion, Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Committee (SAPE) and UD-ADVANCE.
