Spring exhibition to showcase UD's costume collection

1:12 p.m., Jan. 29, 2013--The exhibition “Common Threads: A History of Fashion through a Woman’s Eyes” will be on view Feb. 6-June 28 in the University of Delaware’s Old College West Gallery.

Drawing from the Historic Costume and Textiles Collection within UD’s Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies, the exhibition chronicles 20th century women’s fashion and explores the meaning of fashion, in both social and historical contexts. It showcases 19 garments, in addition to several accompanying accessories, selected from the collection.

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

The exhibition is presented by the Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies in conjunction with the Department of Art Conservation and the University Museums.

An opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m., Friday Feb. 15. A guided tour of the exhibition will begin at 5:30 p.m. The opening and the exhibition are open to the public free of charge. For registration, write to universitymuseums@udel.edu or call 302-831-8037.

Founded in 1971, the Historic Costume and Textiles Collection consists of over 3,500 items of clothing, as well as 18th century textiles, and features many examples of designer apparel and accessories. The collection reflects the generous contributions of University alumni and members of the greater community.

‘Common Threads’ symposium

A “Common Threads: A History of Fashion through a Woman’s Eyes” symposium will be held Saturday, April 6, in the Trabant University Center Theatre. The symposium will feature talks and presentations from University faculty, students, and noted guest lecturers.

The theatre is located on the lower level of the Trabant University Center, on the corner of Main Street and South College Avenue in downtown Newark. Parking for the symposium is available in the Trabant University Center garage.

The exhibition and symposium is generously supported through a grant from the College of Arts and Sciences’ Interdisciplinary Humanities Research Center, and combines the expertise of faculty, staff and students from the UD departments of Fashion and Apparel Studies, Art Conservation, and the University Museums.
