8:35 a.m., Feb. 1, 2013--The University of Delaware Library has announced a new exhibition, “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: Black History Month 2013,” which will be on view Feb. 1-28 in the Information Room on the first floor of the Morris Library.

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History has dedicated Black History Month 2013 to commemorate two important anniversaries -- the sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

On display are a narrative from African-American Abolitionist Frances E.W.  Harper, letters and pamphlets related to the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, among other significant writings related to both of these important events.

The exhibition highlights the people who advocated for black emancipation, freedom, justice and equality, and the movements that have sought to achieve these goals.

“At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: Black History Month 2013” is curated, designed and installed by Laurie Rizzo, assistant librarian, from the Special Collections Department of the University of Delaware Library.

The exhibition is also available online.
