Black American Studies announces spring lecture series

9:17 a.m., Feb. 7, 2013--The University of Delaware Department of Black American Studies has announced its Brown Bag Lecture Series for the spring semester.

The series is free and open to the public. Each lecture will last about 30 minutes and will be followed by open discussion.

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Lectures are scheduled as follows:

Thursday, Feb. 28, 7-9 p.m., Multipurpose Rooms A and B, Trabant University Center, "The People’s Report: The Link Between Structural Inequality and Physical Violence in Wilmington, Delaware," Yasser A. Payne, associate professor of Black American Studies at UD.

Thursday, March 14, 12:20-1:10 p.m., 203 Munroe Hall, "Choreopoetry and the Art of African American History," P. Gabrielle Foreman, Ned Allen Professor of English and professor of Black American Studies, and Lynnette Y. Overby, professor of theatre, both UD.

Monday, April 8, 12:20-1:10 p.m., 203 Munroe Hall, "Jim Crow in Camouflage: Militarism and the Endless Perpetuation of America’s Drug War in Impoverished African-American Communities,” Benjamin D. Fleury-Steiner, associate professor of sociology and Black American Studies, UD.

Monday, May 13, 12:20-1:10 p.m., 203 Munroe Hall, “Letters to Ms. Em: Transforming a Life Through Literacy and Love,” Emlyn Q. DeGannes, MeJah Book Inc., ANU Direction Publishing, Claymont, Del.
