April 25: Area Studies Fair
CGAS sets inaugural Area Studies Fair in Perkins Student Center
11:14 a.m., April 22, 2013--Sponsored by the University of Delaware’s Center for Global and Area Studies (CGAS), the inaugural Area Studies Fair will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 25, in the Perkins Student Center Gallery.
The fair is aimed at showcasing UD’s Area Studies Program, with opportunities for students to learn about cross-disciplinary majors and minors in African Studies, Asian Studies, European Studies, Islamic Studies, Jewish Studies, and Latin American and Iberian Studies. The faculty director of each program will be present to answer questions about these majors and minors.
Events Stories
June 5: Blue Hen 5K
June 6-9: Food and culture series
Students who attend will also be treated to opening remarks by Alan Fox, professor of philosophy; a belly dance demonstration and talk by an Islamic Studies minor; and an artistic presentation by the Delaware African Student Association. Internationally-themed food and music will be provided.
The Area Studies Fair celebrates the University’s philosophy, as stated in the Path to Prominence strategic plan, that “global experience, both on our campus and beyond, is critical to our success.”
Students in the Area Studies majors and minors are trained to critically analyze the international topics that are constantly seen in the news cycle: globalization, multiculturalism, democratic development, migration, and environmental concerns, among others.
These comprehensive academic programs allow students to learn not only about the politics and economics of other countries but also about their cultures, histories, arts, languages and literatures.
Many career opportunities are open to students who major or minor in Area Studies. Their training prepares students to pursue careers in government, non-governmental organizations and aid agencies, education, and international business and banking. In addition, these programs provide a solid foundation for graduate study.
