Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Students who attend will also be treated to opening remarks by Alan Fox, professor of philosophy; a belly dance demonstration and talk by an Islamic Studies minor; and an artistic presentation by the Delaware African Student Association. Internationally-themed food and music will be provided.

The Area Studies Fair celebrates the University’s philosophy, as stated in the Path to Prominence strategic plan, that “global experience, both on our campus and beyond, is critical to our success.”

Students in the Area Studies majors and minors are trained to critically analyze the international topics that are constantly seen in the news cycle: globalization, multiculturalism, democratic development, migration, and environmental concerns, among others.

These comprehensive academic programs allow students to learn not only about the politics and economics of other countries but also about their cultures, histories, arts, languages and literatures.

Many career opportunities are open to students who major or minor in Area Studies. Their training prepares students to pursue careers in government, non-governmental organizations and aid agencies, education, and international business and banking. In addition, these programs provide a solid foundation for graduate study.
