10:09 a.m., April 29, 2013--In April, the University of Delaware’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) and the School of Education recognized outstanding faculty members who have demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication in educating, advising, and advancing research in their fields.

This year, Dean Lynn Okagaki established two awards – the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Dean’s Faculty Research Award. The awards were presented at a CEHD ceremony on April 11.

Honors Stories

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

The Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes outstanding faculty instructors who demonstrate a notable commitment to excellence in teaching. The first co-recipients were Robert Hampel, professor in the School of Education (SOE), and Michael Ferrari, professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS).

Hampel has a distinguished record of outstanding teaching of both undergraduate and graduate students throughout his 28-year career at UD. During his tenure, Hampel served as SOE acting director, advised 56 doctoral candidates, including five current Delaware school district superintendents, and served on 73 doctoral committees, giving careful attention to each student.

“Bob consistently earns excellent teaching evaluations across a wide range of courses,” said Ralph Ferretti, SOE director. “He strives to make personal connections with his students, even in large classes, generating compelling and effusive testimonials. He is a dedicated and committed educator and mentor who is passionate about teaching.”

Ferrari was recognized for being able to strike a unique balance with his students.

“Michael has the unusual ability of being an extremely demanding teacher with very high classroom standards, and yet being genuinely liked and respected by a cross-section of students,” wrote Bahira Trask in her nomination. “His breadth of knowledge within his field is superlative and it is this love of learning that he continually brings to his students while simultaneously fostering their own intellectual abilities.”

The CEHD Dean’s Faculty Research Award was presented to Elizabeth Farley-Ripple, assistant professor of education.

Although many education researchers purport to use mixed or multiple research methods in their work, Farley-Ripple is a well-qualified expert in both quantitative and qualitative research methods. She has received one of the highly competitive Spencer Foundation research grants to support her work on the use of longitudinal data in education decision-making.

Because of her methodological expertise and the enthusiasm that she brings to her work, she has frequently been sought as a collaborator on projects with faculty across the University.

School of Education Awards

On April 12, during CEHD’s Celebration of Excellence, the School of Education presented two awards to faculty and staff.

The Second Mile Award was presented to Barbara VanDornick, associate director of the Delaware Center for Teacher Education in recognition and appreciation of her exemplary support and service to the field of education.

VanDornick worked tirelessly with faculty in SOE and across campus to support their preparation for the latest NCATE accreditation. As the UD certification officer, her knowledge of teacher certification requirements for Delaware and neighboring states is unmatched. She works to make sure that our candidates receive accurate information, and she is never too busy to stop and answer a student’s question.

The Distinguished Faculty Award was given to Chrystalla Mouza, associate professor, to recognize outstanding achievement in research, teaching and service that is beyond expectation of the position.

During the award presentation, it was noted that, “In addition to coordinating the undergraduate educational technology courses, Dr. Mouza consistently has excellent teaching evaluations. She participated in grants from the Delaware Department of Education and from the National Science Foundation totaling over $9.2 million. In service, she excels as well, serving on several national committees and served as a panel reviewer, chaired committees for AERA and organized mentoring seminars.”
