Top honors

Students recognized at General Honors Award Ceremony


3:02 p.m., Nov. 22, 2011--Top students in the University of Delaware Honors Program were recognized in a special ceremony, held Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Trabant University Center.

The award recipients earned 18 or more Honors credits in their first two years at the University and have overall GPAs of 3.20 or higher. They were presented certificates by the Honors Program director and were congratulated on stage by their college deans or deputy deans.

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

This year's 327 honorees included 14 in the Agriculture and Natural Resources, 179 in Arts and Sciences, 43 in the Lerner College of Business and Economics, five in Earth, Ocean, and Environment, 14 in Education and Human Development, 55 in Engineering and 31 in Health Sciences. (Students earning double degrees in two different colleges are counted twice.) 

This year, 28 percent of the qualifying students earned 25 or more Honors credits, and one student earned 52. Some 74 percent of the recipients have grade point averages of 3.5 or higher, and 13 honorees have 4.0 GPAs.

Michael Arnold, director of the University Honors Program, opened the ceremony and welcomed guests to the event.

Deputy Provost Nancy Brickhouse offered congratulations to the students, telling them that the Honors Program is "a passport to some really great things down the road, a symbol of your hard work and commitment." 

Brickhouse also thanked parents for their support and UD faculty and administrators who have provided the students "guidance and wise counsel."
