7:49 a.m., May 1, 2012--George C. Hsiao, the Carl J. Rees Professor in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Delaware, has been honored by the journal Applied Numerical Mathematics, which has dedicated an issue to him.

The papers in the special edition were written by some of the participants in an international conference, "Advances in Boundary Integral Equations and Related Topics," which was held at the University in 2009 in Hsiao's honor. Guest editors of the journal included L. Pamela Cook, professor of mathematics and of chemical and biomolecular engineering at UD and associate dean of the College of Engineering, who helped organize the conference.

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

In an introductory letter, the journal's editors praised Hsiao's wide-ranging research interests and his collaborations with numerous other mathematicians. Organizers of the 2009 conference added "and Related Topics" to its title because of Hsiao's work in so many different areas, the editors wrote.

"It is important to highlight that George brings a unique perspective to his work, with his considerable strengths as an analyst combined with his computational expertise and his experience as an engineer," the editorial continued.

The letter also noted Hsiao's "positive and lasting impact on his many students," saying that he has "guided their academic work and been a notable and engaged mentor through their professional lives."

Hsiao earned bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering and a doctorate in mathematics. He joined the UD faculty in 1969 and was named the Rees Professor in 2005. He received the Francis Alison Award, the University's highest faculty honor, in 2000 and has received Outstanding Teacher and Outstanding Scholar awards from the College of Arts and Sciences.
