1:14 p.m., Jan. 23, 2012--For those who are interested in entering the financial planning field, an information session will be held on Thursday, Feb. 2, for the University of Delaware's Certificate in Financial Planning. The information session will take place in 230 Alfred Lerner Hall on the University’s Newark Campus at 6 p.m.

The increased demand for financial advisers is largely being fueled by baby boomers seeking professional financial advice on monetary and retirement matters. Also, since many companies have replaced traditional pension plans with retirement savings programs, more individuals are managing their own retirement and seeking professional advice to do so.

Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Opportunities in this field will continue to expand at much faster than the average job growth rate, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor. An industry survey reveals that 94 percent of financial planning professionals are highly satisfied with their career choice, gaining the most satisfaction out of helping clients improve their lives, as well as the challenge of addressing their clients’ financial goals and problems.

UD’s program is approved to fulfill the education requirement for those seeking the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation, which is considered the industry’s "gold standard."

“CFP certification is the most recognizable accreditation in a well-informed market place," explains Daniel Danese, certificate program director, and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Certified Licensed Underwriter.

Recent studies have shown that professionals who earned their CFP certification enjoyed an average income growth of 30 percent, as well as reporting significantly higher earnings compared to planners holding other professional designations or no designation at all.

The University’s program can be completed in a little over a year. The cost of the complete certificate program is $4,995 and includes all textbooks. Payment plans are available. People who register and pay in full at (or before) the information session receive a 10 percent discount. Class begins March 14.

In addition to completing the education requirement, CFP certification requirements include work experience, passing the CFP exam, an ethics check and a bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college or university.

Those who are interested in the program can attend the free information session on Feb. 2 to meet the program director, faculty and graduates of the program and learn more about the certificate, CFP certification and financial planning as a career. Light refreshments will be served. There is no charge to attend, but please reserve a seat by calling 302-831-7600 or visiting the website.

For more information about the Certificate in Financial Planning, including faculty credentials, curriculum information and a detailed course schedule, visit the website, call 302-831-7600 or write to continuing-ed@udel.edu.
