Feb. 23: 'Brahms and Friends'

First of three-part music presentation on Brahms, contemporaries set

9:26 a.m., Feb. 17, 2012--The University of Delaware Department of Music will offer a three-part concert series, "Brahms and Friends," with the first to be held at 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 23, in the Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts.

The series will continue with performances at 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, and at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 22.

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for senior adults and $3 for students and will be available at the door at the time of the performances.

The presentations feature music for violin and piano, and for cello and piano, by Brahms and his contemporaries.

Performing will be Kate Ransom, violin, and Lawrence Stomberg, cello, both members of the Serafin String Quartet, UD's quartet in residence. Joining them will be faculty artist pianist Julie Nishimura and guest artist pianists Neal Kurz and William Ransom.

About the performers

Kate M. Ransom is a recitalist and chamber musician who has presented concerts throughout the United States and in several other countries. She has performed in major chamber music concert halls around the world, including New York’s Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and in Washington, D.C., at the Library of Congress. She is president and CEO of The Music School of Delaware.

Lawrence Stomberg is a soloist and chamber musician. He is a faculty member for the Department of Music at UD, and is a member of the Serafin String Quartet. He has performed at venues across the United States and joined the quartet in its London debut in September 2010.

Pianist Julie Nishimura has been the faculty accompanist for the Department of Music at UD for 23 years. She has performed more than 380 collaborative recitals and 45 opera and scene-study performances with the Opera Workshop and Opera Theatre.

Neal Kurz is a member of the collaborative piano staff at the Shepherd School of Music. He has studied at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Michigan. He has appeared on numerous occasions as a keyboardist with the Houston Symphony, as well as a collaborate pianist in other performances.

Pianist William Ransom has appeared in recital, as a soloist with orchestras, and as a chamber musician in several places around the world. Ransom is currently the Mary L. Emerson Professor of Piano and head of the piano faculty at Emory University in Atlanta.
