May 11: College of Health Sciences gala

College sets friend and fund raising event for new health sciences complex

2:25 p.m., April 30, 2012--The College of Health Sciences (CHS) at the University of Delaware will hold its second annual gala on Friday, May 11, from 6-10 p.m., at UD’s new Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus on the former Chrysler site.  Organized around the theme “The Future of Healthcare,” the event will showcase some of the innovations in research and education underway in the college.

“The gala will continue our effort to raise dollars to transform the site into a life and health sciences complex with a health and wellness focus, linked to our clinical partners and our community,” said CHS Dean Kathleen Matt.

Events Stories

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

“Our vision is to establish a vibrant community on the site, where health is not only the topic of our research, education, and clinical programs but also a way of life. We have many exciting plans for the complex, ranging from inter-professional education programs and interdisciplinary research to onsite clinics and translational initiatives.”

The gala will be held in the back bay area of the former Chrysler assembly plant. Plans for the evening include updates on development plans for the site, programmatic showcases at several “learning lounges,” Healthcare Theatre performances, a silent auction and raffle for a Bermuda getaway, a gastronomical mixologist, and the opportunity to mingle with community, state, university and regional leaders.

“We realize that it will take many people working together to realize our vision, and our hope is that this gala will help us to build a 'Friends of the College' group within the local medical, business, and government communities so that we can turn the dream into reality,” Matt said.

About the CHS vision

The College of Health Sciences' vision is to establish a vibrant community at the Health Sciences Complex on the University of Delaware’s Science Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus, where health is not only the topic of research, education, and clinical programs but also a way of life. Fitness facilities, walking and biking trails, and healthy eating options will be available on site to facilitate wellness in this living, breathing 24/7 community.

The complex will include space for inter-professional education programs for health care students, housing for students completing residencies and preceptorships, facilities for interdisciplinary research institutes and centers, and space for biomedical and biotechnology companies.

On-site clinics will provide convenient and comprehensive health care and health-related services for employees and the community. These clinics will also provide an academic learning opportunity for students and a platform for university-driven, patient-oriented research.
