Denver Bronco, UD alum Mike Adams to discuss his experiences, service

4:02 p.m., April 5, 2012--Mike Adams, a professional football player with the Denver Broncos and a 2004 graduate of the University of Delaware, will return to campus on Thursday, April 19, to discuss his experiences and the foundation he created in his hometown to help children get a positive start.

Adams will discuss "Reaching Back, While Moving Forward" from 4-5:30 p.m., April 19, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center. The program is sponsored by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies in the College of Education and Human Development.

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

A member of UD's 2003 national champion football team, Adams won several honors as a student-athlete, and his career totals of 213 tackles and 11 interceptions rank him 11th in school history in interceptions.

After graduation, Adams joined the San Francisco 49ers and then signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2007. Last month, he signed with the Denver Broncos. 

Off the field, Adams has complemented his UD degree from the then-College of Education and Public Policy with studies at Stanford University Graduate School and the Wharton School of Business. 

He and his childhood friend, Gerald Hayes of the Arizona Cardinals, founded the Rising Stars Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization committed to changing the lives of inner-city children in Paterson, N.J. Each year, they host a free youth football camp inviting pro athletes and friends to help teach youngsters football drills and talk to them about life skills off the field. He also hosts "Spirit Nights," evenings of fun, games, autograph sessions, giveaways and fundraising to benefit the Rising Stars Foundation.

During the past four NFL seasons, Adams has sponsored the  I Am Not a Hero Foundation, which has provided home game tickets to members of the U.S. military and their families. He also participated in the Cleveland Browns Hometown Huddle initiative that helps build playgrounds for youth in Cleveland.
