
Women honored
Two students honored for academic, personal achievements
10:04 a.m., May 20, 2011--Two University of Delaware students -- Talia Sykes and Marissa Kinsey -- were recognized for their exceptional academic, professional and personal achievements at a May 12 luncheon hosted by the Office of Equity and Inclusion.
They received awards, which include certificates of appreciation and monetary prizes, that are named for two women who have made valuable contributions to the University: Bessie B. Collins, the late former dean of women who advocated continuing education for women; and Mae Carter, former assistant provost for women's affairs and executive director of the Commission on the Status of Women.

Warren Award
Talia Sykes, a doctoral student in educational leadership from Mt. Laurel, N.J., received the $500 Collins Award, which annually recognizes a student who has maintained academic and civic excellence while overcoming special difficulties. She was nominated by David Hannah, staff assistant in the School of Education; Cynelsa Broderick, a undergraduate student in environmental engineering; Lakisha Guinn, a graduate student in health sciences; and Kristal Olowolafe, events manager in the Career Services Center. They cited her achievement in advancing the field with her studies, involvement and research interests and also said she has dedicated her life to helping other students succeed.
Marissa Kinsey, a senior from South Ozone Park, N.Y., received the Carter Award, a $1,500 scholarship that is awarded annually to a female student for her dedication to the advancement of women at UD. Kinsey is an honors student majoring in anthropology and women's studies, with minors in material culture studies and sexualities and gender studies. She was nominated by Margaret Stetz, Mae and Robert Carter Professor of Women's Studies, who called Kinsey an amazing scholar who is an advocate for women and the LGBT community as a leader in several student organizations.
