May 4: Coastal community preparedness
Lewes workshop to discuss natural hazards, climate change
11:55 a.m., April 25, 2011--The Delaware Sea Grant College Program, together with ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability USA and the city of Lewes, will host a workshop to present the city’s Hazard Mitigation and Climate Adaptation Action Plan. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, in Lewes City Hall Council Chambers. All Lewes residents and property owners are encouraged to attend.
The draft action plan was developed over the past ten months through public workshops and in partnership with city commissions and committees. It is designed to improve resilience to natural hazards and climate change, including the city’s ability to manage flood risks and help protect people and property from natural hazards such as coastal storms.

During the public meeting, project leaders will present the draft plan, and participants will have an opportunity to provide feedback prior to the plan’s completion. Wendy Carey of Delaware Sea Grant, Missy Stults and Daniella Hirschfeld of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability USA, and other team members will be on hand to provide information about the ongoing pilot project.
“Lewes has a strong history of hazard mitigation planning and preparedness, and so it is perfectly poised to take advantage of emerging information about climate change impacts and make appropriate changes,” Carey said.
