Free and open to the public, the exhibition will be on view from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. daily.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Rudi Matthee, Distinguished Professor of History and director of Islamic Studies, will present a lecture on the Omayyad Mosque of Damascus at 5 p.m., Monday, April 25, also in the Perkins Student Center Gallery.
Hemede, who is from Damascus, Syria, has a style that oscillates between a realistic and a romantic interpretation, creating an abstract representation of the peaceful coexistence of religions in Syria, according to Ikram Masmoudi, assistant professor of Arabic Studies, who helped organize the exhibition.
Masmoudi said Syria is a place “where Muslims and Christians have been living in peace together for centuries,” adding, “In a time of increased intolerance and in the context of the very many wars engulfing the region, we would like to revive and resuscitate the memory of tolerance and peace between different faiths.” They found the Syrian example to be an inspiration.
The exhibit is titled “Crosses and Minarets” to represent religious symbolism.
