Installing Exceed Student Edition:
Preparation for Installing Exceed
If Exceed is already installed on your system you MUST
un-install it before installing the customized version, even
if you are "upgrading" from the previous year's
Student Edition (and even if it is the same version of the
software).
- If you have made your own personalized settings for Exceed, you
should run Exceed's Xconfig program and take notes on your changes
before continuing. You may want to use Xconfig to make the same
personalizations after completing the new installation described
below. You may also want to make a backup copy of your user
directory to avoid losing any customized settings you have created.
This directory may be located in several different places, depending
on the version of Exceed and the version of Windows. The default
locations are:
Exceed 6.x on Windows 95/98/ME:
C:\Program Files\Exceed.95
Exceed 6.x on Windows NT 4.0 or 2000:
C:\Program Files\Exceed.NT
Exceed 7.0 on Windows 95/98/ME:
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Hummingbird\Connectivity\7.00\Exceed
Exceed 7.0 on Windows NT 4.0:
C:\WINNT\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Hummingbird\Connectivity\7.00\Exceed
Exceed 7.0 on Windows 2000:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINNT\Application Data\Hummingbird\Connectivity\7.00\Exceed
Note that some files, particularly Exceed configuration (.cfg) and
Xsession (.ses) files, are not compatible between versions of Exceed.
- On the Windows Taskbar (to the left of the clock), click the small,
red, demon-shaped icon if it appears. When the Inetd Configuration
Window opens, select Exit, and then select OK. (This program may or
may not be running - if you don't see this icon:
, it is not running.
If it is running, you must disable it before attempting to
un-install the software.)
- From the Windows Start button, click "Settings", then "Control Panel",
and double-click "Add/Remove Programs." Click the Exceed entry and then
click the "Add/Remove" (or "Remove") button to start the
un-installation process.
- Reboot the system.
- Delete the old Exceed directory and its contents, if the directory
is still there. (Look in C:\Program Files for a folder named "Exceed.95",
"Exceed.NT", or "Hummingbird".)
Installing the Customized Version
NOTE: if you are installing Exceed under Windows XP, you must install version
7.1. Please refer to "Obtaining Exceed"
if the CD you have is for a version prior to 7.1. Before you can run the installer,
you must download a patch from:
http://www.hummingbird.com/support/nc/index.html
and follow the instructions given with that file in order for the installer to work.
After you have installed the software, you will need to run the Hummingbird Update
utility that comes with Exceed to update the software to be fully compatible with
Windows XP. Since a customized distribution of version 7.1 is not yet available,
you will need to refer to
"Customizing Exceed"
for step-by-step instructions.
If you will be installing Exceed under any version of Windows other than XP, you
may continue with these instructions.
- Close all programs that are currently running. If you have any version
of Exceed prior to 6.2 installed, be sure to do the steps above.
- If it is a Windows NT or Windows 2000 system, log in as "administrator" or
as a user who has administrator rights. The setup program will give you
the option to install Exceed so that it is accessible by all users, and
this is the recommended procedure. Setup may not run properly if you
do not have administrator rights, and if you do not choose the option
to install Exceed for "Anyone who uses this computer (all users)" then
you will only be able to run Exceed as the user that was logged in when
Exceed was installed.
- If you obtained the CD from the TSC:
- Insert the CD in your CD-ROM drive. The setup program should appear
within 30 seconds. If it does not appear,
- Double-click the "My Computer" icon.
- Double-click the icon for your CD-ROM drive.
- Double-click the Msetup (or Msetup.exe) icon.
- Click "Install Exceed (UD custom settings)".
If you downloaded the software from the purchase site, find the folder
where it was stored on the hard drive and double-click it.
- You will be prompted to choose a language for the installation. This
language will be used for the install process and in all Exceed
dialogs, menu options, etc. once the software is installed.
- When you see the "Welcome" screen, click "Next." Read and indicate
agreement to the License Agreement (assuming you agree!) and click
"Next".
- Fill in your name for the user name. You can fill in
"University of Delaware" for the organization or just leave it blank.
Click "Next".
- If you are installing on an NT or 2K system, this is the screen where
you can choose to install for all users or just the current user.
- You will be prompted to choose the installation path for Exceed.
By default Exceed will install itself in the standard program file
area (C:\Program Files on most systems). Click "Next" to accept
the installation directory.
(You should not change the default directory unless it's essential.
For example, you might need to choose a different hard drive if
your C: drive is nearly full.)
- You will be presented with a choice of three installation options:
"Typical", "Custom", or "Complete". The "Typical" option will
install all of the components that are necessary to use Exceed, but
leaves many non-essential components out. "Custom" will allow you
to choose which components will be installed, and "Complete" will
install all components. The recommended choice is "Typical" -
you may always add or remove components later by re-running the
setup program.
Note: regardless of which option you choose,
Exceed will be installed with the UD custom settings. If you want
to install with the "factory" settings for some reason, quit the
installer and choose "Install Exceed ("factory" settings)" from the
Hummingbird Master Setup screen.
- Once you have chosen your installation option, click "Next" and
then "Install" to start the installation. Depending on the speed
of your system and whether or not a previous version of Exceed
must be removed first, this may take several minutes.
- Once all of the files have been copied to your hard drive, you will
be prompted to choose a keyboard layout file. Unless your keyboard
is not a standard US-English (QWERTY) keyboard, keep the default
setting of "us.kbf" and click "Next".
- You will be prompted to set a password to lock your Exceed
configuration. We recommend that you do not set a password
on a single-user workstation - the password doesn't really prevent
anyone from changing your settings (if they are sufficiently
determined), and can cause more trouble than it is worth if you
forget it. Click "Skip" to move to the next screen, or enter
the same password in both input areas and click "Next".
- You will be prompted to run the Xperf program, which optimizes
Exceed's graphical performance. It is recommended that you run
this program to ensure the best possible performance; however,
if you are in a hurry you can click "Skip" and run Xperf later.
If you elect to run it, do not move the mouse while the test
graphics are displayed on the screen.
- When the setup process completes, you will be prompted to click
"Finish". You may also be prompted to reboot, in which case you
should do so.
If you installed using the UD-customized installer, you should be ready to
begin using Exceed. If you installed from the downloaded file or from the
"factory" installer (this applies to all Windows XP users), you should read
the
instructions for customizing Exceed for UD.
For some instructions on further customizing Exceed to fit your needs and
tips on making efficient use of Exceed, see
Customizing Your UNIX Composers Account, and
How to Use Exceed. You may also consult the
Exceed User's Guide, which is included in the installation and can be
found in the Programs menu under "Hummingbird Connectivity V7.0/Online
Documentation." You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to view
the guide; you can install Acrobat Reader from the Exceed CD (on the
"3rd Party Software" menu) or download the latest version from
Adobe's site.
