The Exceed CDs distributed at the Technology Solutions Center (TSC) have already been customized for use at UD. If you obtained your CD at the TSC, skip this document and refer next to Customizing Your Composers Account and How to Use Exceed. However, if you bought your copy of Exceed from a third party vendor or directly from Hummingbird Communications, Ltd., or purchased Exceed Student Edition and downloaded and installed the software directly from the web, continue with this document.

Options for Customizing Exceed

There are two ways to customize Exceed. You may:
  1. Download and install UD-customized files in your Exceed user directory.

    - OR -

  2. Manually apply changes to the Exceed configuration.

Download The UD-Customized Files

[
back to top] Download a self-extracting archive of customized Exceed files. This is a set of files that should be copied to your Exceed user directory. The archives are set to unzip the files into the default path for the corresponding operating system, but will allow you to change the path before unzipping.

NOTE: The files are the same for all versions of Windows; the archives differ only in the path to which they extract the files. The default path for the Exceed 7.0 user directory depends on the operating system version:

On Windows 9x/ME machines:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Hummingbird\Connectivity\7.00\Exceed

On Windows 2000 machines:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINNT\Application Data\Hummingbird\Connectivity\7.00\Exceed

NOTE:These files have NOT been tested under Windows XP. Please refer to the manual configuration instructions if you are configuring Exceed under Windows XP.

On Windows NT 4.0 machines:

    C:\WINNT\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Hummingbird\Connectivity\7.00\Exceed

The user directory path may be changed at installation, so you may have to hunt for it and change the extraction path in the self-extractor appropriately. On Windows NT or 2000 machines, you will probably need to be logged in with administrative rights, unless Exceed was installed for a single user.

The files extracted by the self-extractor are named:

appdb.txt
exceed.cfg
exceed.ini
hostdb.txt
xdmcp.txt
xstart.ini

Warning: each of these files will overwrite an existing file of the same name in the User directory. If you have made alterations to these files (which could be made directly in a text editor for all files except "exceed.cfg", or using the Xconfig and/or Xstart utilities), you should make a back-up copy of these files before proceeding. It is highly recommended that you make a back-up of the "exceed.cfg" file in any case before attempting to replace it. For all of the above-listed files except "exceed.cfg", you can extract the files to a temp directory and use a text editor to merge the UD-customized files with your existing ones ("exceed.cfg" is only editable via the Xconfig utility - see below for details on manually configuring Exceed).

download custom files for Windows 95/98/ME           download custom files for Windows NT 4           download custom files for Windows 2000

In case you ever want to revert to the original versions of these files, the following archives provide them (both the original and UD-customized files are also included on the UD-customized CD):

download original files for Windows 95/98/ME           download original files for Windows NT 4           download original files for Windows 2000

Manually Configuring Exceed

[
back to top]

If you installed Exceed from the UD-customized CD or downloaded and extracted the customized files above, then your Exceed installation is already customized. If you installed from the "factory" install on the UD CD, from an original Exceed CD or from the downloaded Student Edition file, the instructions below show how to alter your configuration to match the UD-customized file. These are recommended settings, but you may need to change them somewhat depending on your particular usage requirements.

Run Xconfig from the Hummingbird Connectivity/Exceed program group and make the changes described below. Entries preceeded by an asterisk (*) require action. Other entries should already be set as described, but may have been changed if this is not a fresh "factory" install. All changes are the same for all versions of Windows. For brevity, the settings below are listed without explanation for the most part - for more information about a specific setting, click the "Help" button in the corresponding dialog box.

  • Keyboard subsection:
    • The Primary and Alternate keyboards should both be us.kbf (unless you have a different keyboard layout).
    • * Check the box labeled Allow Clients to Modify Keyboard Mapping.
    • The Alt Key should be set to Left to Windows, Right to X.
    • * Set the Windows Key to To Windows.
    • The Shift Key should be set to Map Both Left and Right.
  • Mouse subsection:
    • * If you have a wheel mouse, and you want the mouse wheel to perform some action in X windows, change the Mouse Wheel setting to Wheel Movement invokes macro. You will then need to program macros for the WheelUp and WheelDown events (mostly likely, you will want them to work as if the PageUp and PageDown keys had been pressed). If you don't have a wheel mouse, or don't care if the wheel works in X windows, then you can leave this option at it's default.
    • The box labeled Middle Button Emulation should be checked. (Note: this option is really only useful for two-button mice - it allows you to press both buttons simultaneously to emulate pressing the middle button of a three-button mouse. If you have a three-button or scroll mouse, you can use the middle button or scroll wheel button and uncheck this option.)
    • The default Click Interval and Movement Threshold (100 and 2) are usually ok. (These two options only affect middle-button emulation - see "Help" for more information.)
  • Communication subsection:
  • Security subsection:
Note: Do NOT set a password, unless you are sure you want to restrict access to Xconfig. If you set a password you will be required to enter it before you can make any configuration changes in the future. Setting a password is not recommended on personal computers, unless they are located in a public site.
    • * Select the radio button labeled Enabled (no host access)
    • * Check the box labeled Allow Clients to Modify Host Access Control List.
    • Enable User Access Control List should be unchecked.
    • The settings in the X Web section shouldn't be changed (and are not applicable at any rate, unless you have a web server which supports this feature).
    • Enable Extension should be unchecked.
  • Protocol subsection:
    • * Check the box labeled Allow Old X11 Bugs.
    • The two pallete-related entries should be checked (Pad Depth 1 Pixmaps To 32 Bits and Use 32 Bits Per Pixel for True Color).
    • The other boxes should remain unchecked.
    • Leave the default Extensions unchanged (if you think they've been changed, you can click the "Default" button to get back the default selections).
  • Screen Definition subsection:
    • You should be on the Screen 0 tab. All of the default settings on this tab are recommended.
      • The radio button labeled All Monitors should be selected. Unless you have more than one monitor and want to restrict Exceed to a single display, this setting doesn't need to be changed.
      • The Window Mode should be set to Multiple. This setting is recommended for most users.
      • Server Visual should be set to Auto Select.
      • The box labeled Panning should be checked, Speed set to Slow and Amount set to 25.
      • The settings for Root Size should be: Width = 0, Height = 0
      • The box labeled Auto Load XRDB should remain unchecked.
      • The Window Manager should be set to Default to Native.
      • The boxes labeled Use Native WM for Embedded Clients and Fit Window To Display should remain unchecked.
      • The box labeled Cascade Windows should be checked.
    • * Click on the Common Settings tab:
      • The Native Window Manager Focus Policy should be set to Click.
      • The box labeled Enable Server Reset should be checked.
      • * Check the box labeled Exit on Server Reset.
      • * Uncheck the box labeled Close Warning on Exit.
    • Unless you have multiple monitors, you should not need to change any settings on the Monitor Info tab.
  • Performance subsection: no changes are necessary (click the "Default" button to return to the standard settings).
  • Video subsection:
    • Choose one of the options Specify in mm or Compute Based On Monitor DPI (dots per inch) and then enter the appropriate information. The second option (DPI) is easier if you know your monitor's DPI rating, but may not be as precise as the first option (most monitors have slightly elongated pixels). Unless you are using applications where it will be critical for the aspect ratio (height to width) and/or linear dimensions to be as accurate as possible, these settings are optional.
  • X Selection subsection:
    • X Selection Associated with Edit Operations should already be set to PRIMARY.
    • The boxes labeled AutoCopy X Selection and AutoPaste To X Selection should already be checked.
    • * Uncheck the box labeled Copy On Focus Loss.
  • Font subsection: no changes are necessary.
  • Troubleshooting subsection:
    • * Uncheck the box labeled Enable Log (all boxes should now be unchecked).
  • Transports subsection:
    • * Change the Broadcast Address to 128.175.255.255
    • Keep Alives should be unchecked.
    • Under "Choose...", Network and Local Interface should be selected.
  • Power Management subsection:
    • Refuse Sleep should be set to always.
    • Prevent display from being shut down should be checked.
    • Server reset after critical sleep should be unchecked.
Note: the default Power Management settings will prevent your machine from entering suspend or sleep modes when the Exceed server is running. If you are using Exceed on a laptop, you may want to consider changing the Refuse Sleep setting.

Finally, refer to Customizing Your Composers Account and How to Use Exceed to complete the Exceed customization and to help you get started.

For more information, consult the Exceed User's Guide, which is included in the installation and can be found in the Programs menu under "Hummingbird Connectivity 7.0 / Online Documentation". You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the guide; You can install Acrobat Reader from the Exceed CD (on the "3rd Party Software" menu) or download the latest version from Adobe's site.
