Shortly after assuming the role as president of the University of Delaware, Dr. Patrick Harker proposed that the University engage more fully in addressing the challenges facing the community it serves. One way is through an ongoing series of public symposia organized by the University and the Delaware Public Policy Institute. Premised on the “Knowledge-based Partnership” concept, focus primarily on policy issues facing Delaware and the region, and considering those in a national context. The purpose is to engage university, government and business leaders in the challenges and opportunities for partnership. Since November 2007, conferences have been held on topics ranging from education for the global economy to creating a livable Delaware. Business leaders, academics and government officials throughout the nation have participated in the programs and approximately 500 attending each sessions. The series has strong endorsement and continuing support from government and business leaders.

True to its official state nickname, Delaware ranked first in the federal Race to the Top competition due to Governor Markell and his administration’s exemplary leadership, as well as the collaborative foundation laid by Vision 2015. Delaware has a plan and has the funds and, collectively, we have the responsibility to our students to create a system of world-class public schools. And, while we have all the critical stakeholders at the table, there’s a lot of work to be done to elevate the first state’s performance from 27th in the nation and deliver on our promise to the next generation.

Vision 2015’s fourth annual knowledge-based partnership conference will report on Delaware’s progress in implementing Vision 2015 and what’s being done to accelerate that work through Race to the Top. Together we will examine the successes we are achieving, the challenges we are facing, and the power and politics of public education reform. We will explore where Delaware sits on the path to first-class schools–reviewing progress and obstacles alike–and what we need to do to ensure an excellent education for each and every public school student in Delaware.

The day is designed for educators, policy-makers, and business and community leaders. It is part of UD’s Knowledge-Based Partnerships Conference Series.

Participants may receive seven (7) clock hours toward renewal of their continuing license. Please provide your name and school at the registration desk the day of the conference.

Registration is required, and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. A limited number of scholarships are available to educators to cover registration fees for the conference as well as substitute teacher costs, if necessary. Please contact Danette O’Connell at doconnell@rodelfoundationde.org for more details.
