66                  Stemming the Tide: How to Manage Large Inventory Transitions

Court Sansom, Texas A&M University

In this paper, we discuss ways to manage efficiently and accurately receive a large shipment of machines.  Before a shipment arrives, certain steps can ease the transition from old computers to new.  An area of much concern is storage; providing safe and appropriate temporary storage  facilities when shipments do arrive is  crucial to a successful inventory management  program.  Documenting new machines and providing for waste management are two of the topics covered in this paper.  For facilities with multiple remote locations, machine distribution and tracking is of primary concern.  Documenting and replacing old machines and accurately tracking the distribution of new machines becomes paramount to both security and efficiency.   In the Open Access Labs (OALs), a division of Computing & Information Services at Texas A & M University, we receive large shipments of computers, up to 700 machines, yearly.  This paper describes some of the steps we take to execute these transitions as smoothly as possible.
