46 Being in the Know: Keeping Student Workers Informed 365 Days a Year
Cynthia
Burdick, Texas A&M University
In the Open Access Labs at Texas A & M University there are over 170 student workers, across five different labs. Our labs are open Monday through Friday and on the weekends. Our largest facility is open 24 hours a day during the week. Our student workers can be assigned shifts during any of these times and across several of the labs. Keeping our student workers informed of policy change, specific lab issues, hardware and software problems, as well as training news is an on going process. Not only does information need to go out to our student workers, we also need to have a mechanism that allows for information to flow back to the full time staff. We are currently using an online newsletter - The Gazette, a listserv, and web pages. Our latest project is adapting WebCt as another forum of information sharing. This paper will outline how we use different information modes to get our message out to our student workers and their message back to us.
