Academic Technology Services at the University of
Rochester is in
the process of revamping its student staff training
program. This is in an
effort to provide top-notch customer service and
support and promote a
continuous learning of new skills.
In the past, training was provided to student staff on
a regular basis;
however, very little was retained, and the most
appropriate skills were not
always being taught.
Additionally, the same material was repeated every
year, and returning staff members had very little
motivation to attend
training.
The future plan for Academic Technology Services
student staff training at
the University of Rochester is to develop a set of
training modules in a
variety of different technology areas. Employment paths will be developed
that are guided by the completion of a series of
training modules in
designated areas of expertise. All student staff will complete a core set
of skills training and then have the opportunity to
select a specialization
track.
This presentation will focus on the process of
creating this extensive
training program and the training modules. In addition we will illustrate a
sample career path that a student employee could
undertake with a series of
the training modules we plan to offer and the benefit
to both the employee
and Academic Technology Services of this program. We will also examine
sample modules that have already been developed.
