26 Computing@TAMU: A World of Opportunity

Computing and Information Services (CIS) is fortunate
enough to have an information table at each of the New Student Conferences
(NSC) that are held each summer for all incoming students. This summer the table will have the
following items on display:
1. A three tier slide presentation that will run
continuously.
a. Tier 1 will hit the highlights and will be about
1-minute long.
b. Tier 2 will have more detail information about the
open-access computer labs on campus.
c. Tier 3 will be specific detailed information about
equipment your computer will need if you live on or off campus. If you live on-campus you will need an
Ethernet card (10BaseT); bring your own cable; and a Resnet Ready brochure. If you live off-campus you will need over
1800 56K v.90 modems; high speed access will be through TAMU DSL or VPN for
cable modems, ISDN, and other off-campus access.
Detailed information about multiple platforms
available for Macintosh, Windows NT, Irix, and Solaris. A complete list of software that is
available online. A list of course-specific software such as SAS, Maple, Food
Processor, etc.
2. A
three-sectional display board with information about the location of the
open-access computer labs on campus and information about CIS.
3. Numerous handouts listing the services offered by
CIS; TAMUNet 7.0 software; bookmarks that have the Help Desk Central phone
number and other important CIS numbers listed along with a list of
shortcourses.
4. A complete booklet about the available computing resources offered by CIS.
