100 UCB Windows 2000 Deployment Project Overview

The University of Colorado at Boulder began planning its Windows 2000 deployment in February, 1999. Making use of Microsoft's planning paradigm, we developed a roadmap that considered our strategic goals, current IT environment limitations, support issues, other IT initiatives, and resource requirements. As a Windows 2000 Rapid Deployment Program site, we benefited from access to technical information and consulting, which greatly enhanced our project planning. The Active Directory domain design requires centralized deployment planning at many sites. AD and other technologies require a high degree of interoperability with existing network services. Our deployment team recognized that the traditional IT boundaries were blurred and we built our technical teams accordingly. This paper will describe our real-world deployment project, rather than an ideal one, including the technical and organizational issues that we need to address.
