Govin Reddy is Professor Extraordinaire at the University of Stellenbosch, Visiting Professor at Rhodes University and Media Consultant with the Thomson Foundation. He specializes in media management and media ethics.
Prof. Reddy has a Masters degree in African history from Northwestern University (Chicago) and studied media management at the Poynter Institute in Florida and the Thomson Foundation in Wales.
Prof. Reddy has held senior management positions in both print and broadcast media spanning 20 years in three countries. These include:
- Head of the English Service, Inter Press Service (Rome)
- Editor, Africa South magazine (Harare)
- Deputy Director, Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (Johannesburg)
- Chief Executive, South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Radio (Johannesburg)
- Chief Executive, Mail & Guardian (Johannesburg)
- Director, Media Leadership Institute, Rhodes University (Grahamstown)
Prof. Reddy played a central role in the transformation of the South African Broadcasting Corporation from a state to public broadcaster under the Mandela government.
Prof. Reddy has presented papers at over 30 international media conferences and has served on the faculty of the Salzburg Seminar (Austria) on three occasions. He is a past president of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association and a founder and Deputy Chairman of the Media Institute of Southern Africa. In 2003 he was appointed to the board of the Media Development and Diversity Agency by the South African Parliament.
Prof. Reddy was active in the anti-apartheid struggle and was imprisoned for six months, placed under house arrest for five years and exiled for ten years.
