John Merrill is currently serving as the Chief of the Northeast Asia Division of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, U.S. Department of State. Merrill has held a teaching and research position at SAIS, Georgetown University, George Washington University, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Lafayette College, Korea University, and the University of Delaware. His areas of specialization include international relations, Chinese modern history, comparative politics, and the politics of both the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea.
Besides numerous journal articles, he has authored several books including Korea: The Peninsular Origins of the War, 1945-1950 (University of Delaware Press, 1989); Was it an Invasion or War of National Liberation? The Korean War, 1948-1950 (Kwahak kwa sasang, 1988) in Korean; and The Cheju-do Rebellion (Shikan-sha, 1988) in Japanese.
He has a B.A. in political science from Boston University, an M.A. in East Asian Regional Studies from Harvard University and a doctorate in political science from the University of Delaware.
Mr. Merrill has received many distinguished Superior and Meritorious Honors Awards throughout his career. He is married and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
