Special programs -- Teacher training in Korea

In January, three ELI administrators and a teacher ventured to wintry Korea for the third year to present workshops to elementary, middle and secondary school teachers of English under the aegis of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE). Director Scott Stevens trained teachers in developing oral intelligibility as well as in his specialty, using drama in the classroom. Associate Director Joe Matterer demonstrated the strategic interaction approach to language teaching developed by the late UD professor of linguistics, Robert DiPietro, and discussed other techniques for developing speaking skills. Associate Director Deb Detzel offered workshops on storytelling and vocabulary building. And Assistant Professor Jo Gielow, with two decades of experience teaching 8- to-12-year-olds in public schools, explained how to teach reading and grammar.
