Conditional Admission Program catches on

The number of students studying at the English Language Institute through the university’s Conditional Admission Program (CAP) has soared. At press time, 41 current ELI students had qualified for university admission at both the undergraduate and graduate level through the program, up from nine a year ago.

Laurie Fuhrmann, ELI admissions assistant, is excited and impressed by the greatly increased number of students applying for these programs.

“It’s satisfying to be able to help these students reach their goals,” she said.

Conditional admission is offered to highly qualified international students who meet the university’s academic requirements but who must improve their English language skills. Undergraduate students who pass the highest level of the English Language Institute’s rigorous English for Academic Purposes courses may begin their regular coursework at UD with no TOEFL, SAT, or ACT exams required.

In addition to conditional admission to undergraduate school, students may also apply for graduate school conditional admission. Those wishing to enter the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics to study for a master’s in business administration (MBA), finance (MS Finance) or organizational effectiveness, development and change (MS OEDC) may qualify for conditional admission either through ELI’s PreMBA program or through the English for Academic Purposes program.

Including those currently studying at ELI, 105 students have been offered conditional admission to UD for spring and fall 2009. ELI proudly congratulates the following students who have matriculated at UD through the CAP program in 2008:

In addition, through a university agreement, CAP student Bader Mushabbab Alqahtani, Saudi Arabia, has entered Wilkes University in Pennsylvania.

Students wishing to enter this program, either as an undergraduate or graduate student, may inquire through Laurie Fuhrmann, ELI admissions assistant. The application form may be found at http://admissions.udel.edu/apply/international.  • JL
