Graduate Student Bryan Bzdek (Murray Johnston's Group) has been selected to receive a 2011 ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Summer Graduate Fellowship. This fellowship awards a $7,000 stipend for three months to Bryan and is sponsored by the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP). Bryan is investigating the mechanisms of atmospheric new particle formation, a phenomenon that may significantly impact global climate. Specifically, he is elucidating the kinetics and thermodynamics of potential particle growth pathways involving nitrogen-containing species by applying a range of mass spectrometric techniques to examine the chemistry of < 20 nm diameter nanoparticles.

The American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry Graduate Fellowship Program is designed to encourage basic research in the field of analytical chemistry, to promote the growth of analytical chemistry in academic institutions and industry, and to provide recognition of future leaders in the field of analytical chemistry.

A total of eight awards were granted this year by the Division to students around the US. This is the third time a student in Professor Murray Johnston's group has received this award. The previous two were Rick Cox and Scott Van Bramer.
