Prof. Larry Overman, UC-Irvine, presented the annual Richard F. Heck (UD FAC 71-89) Lecture, “Recent Studies in Alkaloid Total Synthesis” on 10/22/08. This year’s John C. Wriston, Jr. (UD FAC 55-85) Memorial Lecture, on “Structural Neurology: a New Approach to the Understanding, Treatment, and Prevention of Neurologic Disorders,” was presented by Prof. Gregory Petsko, Brandeis University, on 4/6/09. The remaining external colloquium speakers included Profs. John Bercaw (CalTech), Sandra Eaton (Denver), and Nicholas Turro (Columbia). Internal colloquium lectures were presented by Profs. Steven Brown, Svilen Bobev, Colin Thorpe, and Douglass Taber.
The 2nd Mid-Atlantic Seaboard Inorganic Symposium, organized by Prof. Svilen Bobev, was held at the U of D on 8/6/08. Papers were presented by students, post-docs, and faculty from the following universities: Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland-College Park, Penn State, Drexel, Johns Hopkins, George Washington, Rutgers, Temple, and Georgetown.

The 2nd Membrane Protein Symposium, organized by Profs. Sharon Rozovsky, Tatyana Polenova and Brian Bahnson, attracted ca. 200 participants to the U of D on 10/6/08. The Symposium was supported by the NIH-COBRE Program on Membrane Protein Production and Characterization. Lectures were presented by faculty from the following universities: Virginia, Illinois-Chicago, Pittsburgh, Illinois-Urbana/Champaign, and Penn State. The keynote lecture was presented by Dr. Zoshua Zimmerberg, of the NIH.
The 30th East Coast Ion Chemistry Conference was held on 10/11/08. Talks were presented by speakers from the University of Delaware, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Drexel University, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and DuPont. Topics included GC/MS analyses of hazardous compounds, protein and peptide characterization, ESI, MALDI, and aerosol mass spectrometry. The 31st ECICC will be held on 10/17/09.
