Additional Faculty/Staff Activities and Awards

The 56th Conference on Mass Spectrometry (June 1-5) in Denver, CO, was well attended by current and former UD faculty, staff, postdocs and students. Heading the list were Barbara Larsen (PhD84) who is President of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) and Julia Laskin (former Postdoc with Jean Futrell) who 1) received the Biemann Medal for a significant achievement in mass spectrometry early in his/her career, 2) presented a plenary tutorial on Interactions of Ions with Surfaces and 3) serves as Treasurer for ASMS. Also in attendance were Jean Futrell (former Chair, CHEM/BIOC, and past president of ASMS), Doug Ridge and Murray Johnston. Former postdocs, staff and visiting faculty who were in attendance and/or authors or coauthors of presentations included Eduard Denisov, Kirk Green, Gordon Nicol, Eugene Nicolaev, Alan Rockwood and Martha Vestling. Alumni who were in attendance and/or authors or coauthors of presentations included Paul Altiero (BS00), Dave Arnott (BS89), Ethan Badman (BS96), Cathy Bentzley (PhD97), Yibai Chen (MS93), Rick Cox (PhD03), Joy Ginter (PhD08), Todd Greco (BS03), Gary Kruppa (BS82), Hung-Yu Lin (PhD91), Jeffrey McGuire (MS81), Ron Orlando (PhD88), Peter Reilly (BS81), Phil Ross (PhD95), Patrick Rudewicz (PhD85), Russ Spreen (PhD83), and Fred Strobel (PhD88). Current graduate students in attendance and/or authors or coauthors of presentations were Kaitlin Papson, Melissa Reinard, Jeff Spraggins and Christopher Zordan. We apologize if we missed anyone – the conference has grown to around 7,000 attendees and it has become difficult to make contact with everyone there. Looking ahead to the 2009 meeting in Philadelphia, PA, we plan to have a gala celebration of current and former UD mass spectroscopists – check the Departmental web site in May 2009 for details or contact one of the faculty

Time marches on: four of our CHEM/BIOC alumni were recognized as 50-year members by the ACS: Alan L. Goodman, Ph.D. (BS59), Harold W. Pier (MS59, PhD62), Amy S. Law (MS63, PhD69), and Marvin E. Wildfeuer (PhD63). Topping this accolade was Albert Z. Conner (MS52), who has notched 60 years in his ACS belt!

40's
A query from Willard F. Smith, M.D. (BA43, retired in Ocala, FL) – “Am I the oldest living UD CHEM/BIOC alumnus?” – prompted a non-systematic spot check by your Editor. The 2007-2008 list of financial donors to our Department at the end of this edition of the BHC reveals that the answer is no, i.e., Robert N. Hopkins (BA39) is very much alive and kicking in Milton, DE. Can anyone else claim an earlier graduation date?

It is with great sadness, but with many happy personal memories, that I must report the passing of our Department’s first Ph.D. graduate and one of our finest alumni, Howard A. (Tony) Neidig (PhD48[William Mosher]), on January 19, 2008. Tony devoted the last 60 years of his life to Lebanon Valley College, serving as Department Chair from 1951 until his formal retirement in 1985. Subsequently, however, he and his wife, Helen, were honorary co-chairs of LVC’s Great Expectations Campaign and co-chairs of the Science Initiative to renovate LVC’s Garber Science Center. The Neidigs established and endowed The Neidig Fund for Chemistry Scholarships, the Neidig Chemistry Research Fund, and the Howard Anthony Neidig Award for an outstanding LVC senior. In return, LVC awarded Tony an honorary doctorate in 2004 and renamed its newly renovated science building the Neidig-Garber Science Center. Tony was the co-founder and publisher of Chemical Education Resources, Inc., and served as the Program Director for the Modular Laboratory Program in Chemistry. He received both a Manufacturing Chemists’ Association Award for Excellence in Chemistry Teaching (1970) and the E. Emmet Reid Award from the ACS (1978).
