Biographies

Barbara Sheer

Dr. Barbara Sheer DNSc, FNP-C, FAANP.

Dr. Sheer holds a doctorate from Widener University in nursing education, a MSN with a concentration as family nurse practitioner from the State University of New York (SUNY) Binghamton, a pediatric nurse practitioner certificate from Rutgers School of Medicine and College of Nursing, and a BSN from the University of Pennsylvania.

She developed the undergraduate nursing program at the University of Scranton and the nurse practitioner and combined nurse practitioner/ clinical nurse specialist programs at the University of Delaware. She has been an educator / consultant in nursing education and curriculum development for over 20 years, and has consulted with nurse practitioner programs nationally and internationally. She is nationally certified as a family nurse practitioner by AANP and ANCC and is a partner in Nurse Practitioner InterNational Consultants (NPINC).

Dr Sheer has been actively involved in the nurse practitioner movement for the past 30 years and has held regional, state, and national positions in nurse practitioner organizations. Among the positions were the President of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and Chair of the National Alliance of Nurse Practitioners and Chair of the Fellows of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She was the US representative in planning for the 1st international nurse practitioner conference in London.

As a former Public Health Policy Fellow she continues to work with multidisciplinary groups to forward the primary care agenda. Currently she serves as the chair of the Communications Subcommittee of the ICN International Nurse Practitioner Advanced Practice Nursing Network.

Dr. Kathy Riley-Lawless

Dr. Riley-Lawless is an Assistant Professor at the University of Delaware. She has extensive teaching experience with graduate and undergraduate students in both the classroom and clinical setting. She is also a nurse practitioner at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.

A pediatric nurse for over 25 years, Dr. Riley-Lawless’ research focuses on families. She has examined the effects of family environment on behavioral and physiological cardiovascular risk factors in parents and their adolescents. Currently she is collaborating with nurse researchers from Yale and the University of Pennsylvania, studying families with a child with a chronic condition.
