New dean to lead agriculture college
ON THE GREEN | Mark Rieger, a horticultural scientist and most recently an associate dean at the University of Florida, has been named dean of UD's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) after a nationwide search.
Rieger, who took office Aug. 1, succeeds Robin Morgan, who served as CANR dean for a decade and announced last year that she planned to step down and return to the faculty.
UD President Patrick Harker says Rieger "brings with him the kind of clear vision and commitment to innovation that CANR has enjoyed this last decade under Robin Morgan." He notes that agriculture, in addition to its importance to the state of Delaware, plays key roles in addressing such issues as environmental protection, renewable energy, human health, food sustainability and global responsibility.
Rieger has served as associate dean of the University of Florida's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences since 2006, with major responsibilities in graduate programs, distance education, statewide degree completion programs, the honors program and international education.
Before joining the University of Florida faculty, he was a professor in the University of Georgia's Department of Horticulture. He earned his doctorate in horticultural sciences in 1987 from the University of Florida.
