From our Alumni Association

Alumni Association President Darelle Riabov

I am extremely excited to be the new president of the UD Alumni Association. This is an incredibly dynamic time to be involved with the University of Delaware—as more than 3,000 alumni and friends discovered when they returned for Alumni Weekend in June.

During my tenure, I would like to ask each of you, as alums, to do just one thing: Come back. Come back to see, hear and feel the atmosphere of your alma mater.

Come back to see the beauty of the campus, from the brick-lined walks and beautiful plantings to the sight of construction under way on yet another new—and much needed—building.

Come back to hear the familiar Westminster chimes greet the hour in Memorial Hall or the strains of the Fight Song during the football pregame show.

Come back to feel the pride that the newest students on campus feel at being part of such a prestigious University.

Come back because it is still your University, and never has there been a better time to renew your pride in all that it represents to our local community, to the nation and—these days, with the extended travel and accomplishments of our students—to the world. If it’s been a while, let us know you’re coming and we’ll welcome you.

After you experience all of that, I dare you not to get involved. You can’t help yourself. Blue Hen Pride has a whole new meaning these days, and it’s time that you felt it also.

For example, during Alumni Weekend, the Association paired up with the boards of the regional Alumni Clubs to share information about UDAA activities, its mission and vision. This will help the clubs as they generate enthusiasm for UD in 11 locations throughout the country.

More than 80 of you showed your involvement by walking as alumni delegates at Commencement in May, representing classes from 1950 to 2010.

On July 1, a new slate of UDAA officers and board members began serving. In addition to myself, the officers are Ken Jones, BE ’80, vice president, and Doug Motley, BE ’00, secretary/treasurer. New board members are: Denise DiSabatino Allen, EH ’82; Susan Deppert Hutton, EH ’67; Jennifer Murphy, EG ’99; Steven Beattie, BE ’87; Kenneth Godwin, BE ’79; and Bryan Townsend, BE ’03, ’03M, AS ’04.

In closing, our Alumni Association is only as strong as the sum of its parts. We are all Blue Hens, and we stand over 150,000 strong. That’s an impressive number when we work together. You have a dedicated Board of Directors, poised to serve your interests. Let us know what you see, hear and feel about UD, and we’ll do our best to represent you.

I’ll be looking for you on campus over the next two years. I dare you to come back.
