Men's team anticipates a move up

SPORTS | The men’s basketball team, which went 13-19 overall and 6-12 in the Colonial Athletic Association last season under third-year head coach Monté Ross, returns three starters and six letter-winners as the Blue Hens look to move into the upper echelon of the conference in 2009-10.

Senior point guard Brian Johnson, who has started every game during his first three seasons, will again run the Blue Hen offense. Johnson enters his final season ranked fourth in UD history, with 450 career assists, and second in the CAA last year with 5.0 assists per game. Johnson also averaged 10.0 points per contest and led the CAA with a 48.2 three-point percentage in league games.

He will be joined in the backcourt by junior Jawan Carter, who ranked second on the team and sixth in the conference by averaging 15.0 points per game in 2008-09. Carter, who led the Hens with 62 three-pointers made and a 77.8 free throw percentage, posted eight 20-point games on the season and led the team in scoring 12 times.

The other returning starter will be junior Alphonso Dawson, who averaged 14.1 points per game from his small forward position. The team’s leading returning rebounder, Dawson reached double figures in scoring in all but seven games.

Junior guards D.J. Boney and Edwin Santiago will see plenty of playing time in a crowded and talented Blue Hen backcourt. Sophomore Adam Pegg will anchor the UD frontcourt after scoring 51 points and grabbing 51 rebounds during his rookie campaign. Sophomore Hakim McCullar and redshirt freshman Kelvin McNeil also will challenge for starting forward positions.
