Two colleges change their names

ON THE GREEN | Two of the University’s seven colleges have changed their names. Effective July 1, the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy (CHEP) has become the College of Education and Public Policy, and the College of Marine and Earth Studies has become the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment.

Dean Michael Gamel-McCormick says the former CHEP decided on the change not to indicate any shift in its focus or mission, but purely to simplify its name and enhance its ability to market and refer to the college. The college encompasses the departments of Human Development and Family Studies and of Fashion and Apparel Studies; the schools of Education and of Urban Affairs and Public Policy; and 13 research and service centers. The college administration is “extremely proud of the good work being done” in all the departments, schools and centers, Gamel-McCormick notes.

“While the term ‘Human Services’ may have been dropped from our name, we are no less involved in serving individuals, families, organizations and communities in Delaware and beyond,” he says. Gamel-McCormick recently was named dean of the college (See page 23), following a year as interim dean.

The new College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (CEOE) resulted when the Department of Geography, formerly part of the College of Arts and Sciences, elected to align with the College of Marine and Earth Studies. The mission of the new college is to advance understanding of Earth’s natural systems and the interactions of humans with the environment through engaged interdisciplinary research, teaching and outreach.

CEOE Dean Nancy Targett says that the new college fits well with the vision articulated in the University’s Path to Prominence™ strategic plan.

“We have clustered units that share expertise in policy, science and the human environment,” Targett says. “In doing so, we are accentuating the already strong foundation that UD has in the areas of Earth and ocean studies.”

The college offers undergraduate programs in geology and geography and master’s and doctoral programs in geography, geology, oceanography and marine studies.
