Vietnam veteran Larry Colburn to speak about 1968 My Lai massacre

2:43 p.m., Oct. 27, 2015--A discussion of “Why the My Lai Massacre Matters,” featuring a Vietnam War veteran who helped stop the killings, will be held from 3:30-5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17, in 103 Gore Hall at the University of Delaware.

Lawrence Colburn, who on the day of the massacre – March 16, 1968 – was an 18-year-old door gunner in an OH-23 Raven observation helicopter, will join Guy Alchon, associate professor in UD’s Department of History, for the discussion.

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Colburn’s helicopter team observed the actions being taken against My Lai villagers by American troops led by 2nd Lt. William Calley and stepped in to end the massacre and to rescue 10 survivors.

Subsequently, Colburn has returned to Vietnam several times to help in the rebuilding of My Lai.
