CHS lecture series
College of Health Sciences Distinguished Scholars Lecture Series kicks off Thursday, Oct. 8
10:31 a.m., Oct. 5, 2015--Michael Deschenes, professor and chair of the College of William and Mary Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences, will deliver a lecture at the University of Delaware’s Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus on Thursday, Oct. 8, at noon.
His lecture, “The Effects of Aging on Neuromuscular Adaptations to Increased/Decreased Activity,” will launch the College of Health Sciences 2015-16 Distinguished Scholars Lecture Series.

Deschenes, who specializes in physiology, will discuss the critical role of neuromuscular junctions, which are the synapses allowing nerve-to-muscle communication, in the neuromuscular system.
The lecture, held in the STAR Atrium, is open to the entire UD community.
The series features guest lecturers from seven universities and covers the lifespan with topics ranging from infant speech to health disparities in older adults.

All presentations will be held at the STAR Campus, and are scheduled as follows:
Oct. 8 at noon – “The Effects of Aging on Neuromuscular Adaptations to Increased/Decreased Activity,” Michael Deschenes, professor and chair, kinesiology and health sciences, College of William and Mary.
Nov. 2 at noon – “What is the Long Term Risk of Concussion: Data vs. Fiction,” Steve Broglio, director, NeuroTrauma Research Laboratory, University of Michigan.
Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. – “Health Disparities in Older Adults,” Sarah L. Szanton, director, Ph.D. in nursing, Johns Hopkins University.
Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. – “Physical Activity in Older Adults,” Loretta DiPietro, chair, Department of Exercise Science, George Washington University.
Feb. 22 at noon – “Physical Activity Epidemiology,” Barb Ainsworth, associate director and professor, School of Nutrition and Health Promotion, Arizona State University.
March 21 at 4 p.m. – “Infant Speech and Motor Development,” Jana Iverson, professor, Department of Psychology, University of Pittsburgh.
April 5 at 4 p.m. – “Prevention of Obesity and Diabetes,” Stella Volpe, professor and chair, Nutrition Sciences Department, Drexel University.
